Does biking keep you fit in Brussels?

Many of us are sitting the entire day in the office. Biking to work keeps us fit. Or that is at least what we would like to believe. But is this really true? Two Belgian studies reveal that exposure to air pollution is far higher than assumed before and that bikers inhaled significantly higher (400 to 900%) compared to car drivers. They recommend that cycle paths are developed away from busy roads and that, even more importantly, traffic-related pollution is decreased. Policies should therefore be put in place to minimize those risks (and associated costs) and maximize the health benefits. If we all cycle more, road congestion and traffic-related air pollution will reduce since cycling has low space requirements and is a non- polluting transport mode.
